It all started with a pinky swear…

This weekend marks Theta Xi Gamma’s sixth annual Miracles of Mitch Silent Auction and Benefit Dinner!  We’re all getting very excited about the event because our philanthropy is extremely dear to our organization — one of our Theta alumni actually babysat Mitch.  Although we know the story behind Mitch’s promise, not everyone who reads this or hears us talk about it does.  In order to share this amazing story with everyone we can, here is a little insight to an amazing young man.

Mitch was a 9 year old boy who had been diagnosed with cancer.  He had a wonderful and loving family who would visit him in the hospital as much as they possibly could.  However, he noticed that not every child in the cancer ward got as many visits as he did.  When he talked to his dad about it, he told him that many parents could hardly afford the hospital’s medical bills and so they weren’t able to take time off of work very easily.  Mitch was not happy with how often these children were alone and he wanted to help them out.  He asked his dad to empty his bank account and he put money into envelopes to give to the others on his floor.  He felt so good about helping them out that he had his dad make a pinky swear to continue to help the children and their families forever.

After Mitch passed on April 11, 2003, his parents created the Miracles of Mitch Foundation in order to keep Mitch’s pinky swear and raise money to support families with children who have been diagnosed with cancer like their son.  Almost 10 years later, the pinky swear is alive and well thanks to the amazing efforts of the Miracles of Mitch Foundation and all those who are able to help.

Name: Callyn Woodley

Year at Gustavus: Sophomore

After graduation, I hope to get a job in the metro area involving math and economics. As of right now I’m thinking I want to be an actuary.

I joined Thetas because I had so much fun getting to know the girls at recruitment events and I wanted to have the bond that they all have. I also wanted to get more involved in campus and give back to the community.

My favorite thing about Thetas is hanging out with all my sisters and seeing their pretty, smiling faces around campus. Knowing that I have 31 girls that are always for me is the best feeling :)

Something interesting about me is that I did synchronized swimming for 9 years before college.

One of my favorite quotes, that also happens to apply to Thetas :)   “Sometimes the most ordinary things could be made extraordinary, simply by doing them with the right people” -Nicholas Sparks

Sophomore

After graduation I want to go to graduate school for something in the sociology field but I’m not exactly sure yet!

I joined Thetas because of the amazing girls I met during recruitment and as a way to become more involved in the community.

My favorite thing about being a Theta is having so many strong women there for you no matter what.

Something interesting about me is that baseball is my all time favorite sport and I would die without the Twins.

My favorite quote is: “Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark in the hopeless swaps of the not-quite, the not-yet, and the not-at-all. Do no let the hero in your soul perish in lonely frustration for the life you deserve and have never been able to reach. The world you desire can be won. It exists…it is real…it is possible..it’s yours.”

Why you joined Thetas: I always wanted a family that would always be there for me and be a constant source of support and love, and Thetas have given me that and so much more.

Favorite thing about Thetas: My amazing sisters and what a unique relationship I have with them. It’s unlike any other and there’s no way to describe it!

Something interesting about you: I have a family history of mafia involvement in Italy and Sicily, and they had to flee to America and change our last name!

Kailey Morgan

Hello all. My name is Kailey Elizabeth Morgan and I am a sophomore Spanish and International Management Major.

My plans after graduating are working abroad for a year or two then moving back to the lovely (and cold) MN and working as a management consultant for an international firm. During all this I hope to be getting married and having some kids :)

I joined the Thetas for so many reasons. First and foremost I LOVED that every single one of my sisters are beautiful and WEIRD. I just seemed to fit right in with them. I also loved our philanthropy, Miracles of Mitch. The Thetas have a special bond that I wasn’t able to see within any other sorority.

My favorite thing about Thetas is all the sisters I now have. I always grew up with an older brother and I ALWAYS wanted a sister, now I have over 25 of them :) I have such an amazing bond with each and every sister and I would trust them with my life. You don’t find a relationship like this anywhere else!

Something interesting about myself is that I lived in Missouri for 14 years before I finally was allowed to move to MN to be with family.
