This weekend marks Theta Xi Gamma’s sixth annual Miracles of Mitch Silent Auction and Benefit Dinner! We’re all getting very excited about the event because our philanthropy is extremely dear to our organization — one of our Theta alumni actually babysat Mitch. Although we know the story behind Mitch’s promise, not everyone who reads this or hears us talk about it does. In order to share this amazing story with everyone we can, here is a little insight to an amazing young man.
Mitch was a 9 year old boy who had been diagnosed with cancer. He had a wonderful and loving family who would visit him in the hospital as much as they possibly could. However, he noticed that not every child in the cancer ward got as many visits as he did. When he talked to his dad about it, he told him that many parents could hardly afford the hospital’s medical bills and so they weren’t able to take time off of work very easily. Mitch was not happy with how often these children were alone and he wanted to help them out. He asked his dad to empty his bank account and he put money into envelopes to give to the others on his floor. He felt so good about helping them out that he had his dad make a pinky swear to continue to help the children and their families forever.
After Mitch passed on April 11, 2003, his parents created the Miracles of Mitch Foundation in order to keep Mitch’s pinky swear and raise money to support families with children who have been diagnosed with cancer like their son. Almost 10 years later, the pinky swear is alive and well thanks to the amazing efforts of the Miracles of Mitch Foundation and all those who are able to help.
